MSMG Toolkit v13.x running on Windows 7 SP1 uses its bundled Windows 8.1 DISM (version 6.3.9600.17029) instead of the host operating system’s DISM. When extracting a Microsoft Windows 10 installation ISO containing source\install.esd, the toolkit issues DISM /Get-ImageInfo /ImageFile:install.esd. The generic imaging provider rejects this request with the message 0x80070057 (invalid parameter) and invalid file extension for the image file: “esd”. The toolkit then successfully accesses the same file using DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:install.esd, indicating that the ESD itself is readable. Evidence indicates that the failure originated from the MSMG toolkit applying the wrong DISM interface to the ESD image, and not from the Windows 7 host, the ISO, or the bundled Windows 8.1 DISM binaries.
